They’re good for you, taste great, and can fit into a low-calorie eating plan. They can be your breakfast, lunch, snack, or dessert. Sound too good to be true? Smoothies are more than just the lastest craze in mall food-court options. They’re so tasty and easy to make, you’ll soon be hooked!

How to Make a Smoothie

There is no wrong way to make a smoothie. The options are endless. Choose ingredients from each of the columns below, combine in a blender, and whir until smooth and creamy. Add more milk or juice if needed.

NOTE: If you use fresh or canned fruit, add ice to make it nice and cold OR freeze your fruit in advance.

1 cup of . . . 1-2 cups of . . . 1/2 cup of . . . optional
lowfat yogurt
(regular or frozen)

sherbet

crushed ice

frozen
strawberries,
blueberries,
raspberries, peaches

canned
pineapple

fresh
whatever suits you

milk

soy or rice milk

fruit juice

frozen juice concentrate (add water to dilute)

fruit nectar

2 Tbls. honey

2 Tbls. powdered sugar

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. almond extract


Strawberry-Blueberry Smoothie

1 cup lowfat vanilla yogurt
1 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup lowfat milk
2 Tbsp. honey

Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Garnish with a fresh strawberry.

Raspberry Peach Almond Smoothie

1 cup raspberry sherbet
1 cup frozen peaches
1 cup peach nectar
1/2 tsp. almond extract

Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Banana Orange Smoothie

1 banana, sliced and frozen
1/2 cup orange juice frozen concentrate
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup crushed ice
2 Tbsp. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract.

Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
