Cotton Baby Bibs

It’s easy to make sweet little bibs! They are perfect gifts that are easy to wash, are very practical, and have endless possibilities for color and pattern choices.

Supplies

• pre-made bib (with overlapping tabs) for tracing medium weight interfacing to make pattern
• 2 pieces of cotton fabric the size of your traced bib (those in photos are approx. 12″ by 8″)
• 1 1/4 inches of 1 1/2 inch wide Velcro
• 1 pkg. double fold bias tape in coordinating color

1. Preshrink cotton fabric (wash and dry). Press to remove wrinkles.
2. Trace pre-made bib on interfacing and cut out for pattern.
3. Use pattern to cut out top and bottom pieces for bib. (Rotary cutters are recommended and shown in photo.)
4. Wrong sides together, pin two bib pieces together.
5. Stitch looped piece of Velcro to the top side of the pointed tab. Stitch softer piece of Velcro to the bottom side of the curved tab. (One row of stitching, from one side edge to the other, is all you need.)
6. Trim extra Velcro to match tabs.
7. Open bias tape and insert bib edge, starting at the top of the pointed tab. Pin in place. Allow approx. 3/8 inch overlap and fold the end of the bias tape inside of itself.
8. Set machine to zig-zag stitch and test on a scrap for appropriate width for bias tape.
9. Stitch bias tape to bib, passing through bias tape, Velcro, both layers of cotton, and bias tape again. Go slowly. For “tricky” parts at the curves, stop stitching with the needle down in the fabric, lift the presser foot, and turn the bib slightly. Lower presser foot and continue stitching.
10. When your stitching reaches the starting point, back-stitch to secure. Trim threads.

Note: two 1/4 yard cuts of 44″ wide fabric, 1 pkg. of bias tape, and 4 inches of Velcro will make 3 bibs, depending on the direction of pattern on the fabric)

Step 3 – Cut out using pattern.	Steps 5 & 6 – Stitch Velcro to tabs; then trim.
Steps 9 & 10 – Use zig-zag stitch to apply bias tape to bib edges. Tuck in overlap at the end.	A finished bib. (Needs ironing!!!!)
