The Power of Vinegar

Yesterday I was doing some detailed cleaning in the kitchen and got out the big jug of vinegar.  Sometimes I forget how useful it is!

Recently our Breville "Cafe Roma" Espresso machine had been acting up, seeming to lack power.  Vinegar to the rescue!  I filled the water reservoir halfway with equal parts water and vinegar, then ran the machine for a minute or so at a time.  Next I ran it with water only.  Success!  Cameron said the resulting espresso was better than it has been in months.

The same method can be used to clean your coffee maker.  Use one cup of vinegar and fill the rest of the pot with water.  Run it through the maker.  Follow with a round of just water to rinse it.

Deodorize (and even unclog) a sink drain: Pour one cup of baking soda
in the drain, followed by one cup of vinegar.  Watch the foaming
action!  Let it stand for 5-10 minutes, then flush with very hot water.

Keep your dishwasher in good working order: Pour one cup of vinegar
into dishwasher (or put it in a bowl in the lower rack) and run it
empty, without adding any soap.  The vinegar helps to cut through
residual soap deposits.
