Summer Drinks

Having something cool to drink on a hot summer day is a necessity. Opt for a new fruit juice over ice, simply add a wedge of lemon to your ice water, or chill some tea. Other favorite hot beverages such as coffee and spiced chai are good candidates for colder temps, too.

Chilling Tea
Iced tea and summer go hand-in-hand. If you travel to the South, expect the tea to be sweet. You might even get funny looks if you ask for unsweetened tea. Use stevia instead of sugar if you want a natural, calorie-free sweetness.

Sun tea is a favorite on hot days, but boiling water still does the job. Spruce up your regular iced tea routine by adding mint leaves to the brew or fruit juice to the final product. One caution regarding iced tea – chilling it or adding ice too soon after brewing will make the tea cloudy.

Citrus Mint Iced Tea

2 family-size tea bags
5-6 large sprigs of mint
1/4-1/2 cup sugar (or 3-6 Tablespoons honey)
juice from 2 lemons, freshly squeezed
1 cup orange juice

1. Place tea bags and mint sprigs in a large, heat-proof pitcher.

2. Bring a tea kettle of water to a full boil. Pour over tea bags and mint. Steep for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags. Steep for an additional 2 minutes. Remove the mint.

3. Stir in sugar until completely dissolved. Stir in lemon juice and orange juice.

4. Allow tea to cool at room temperature for about 1 hour before chilling in the refrigerator. OR serve immediately, poured over ice.

When you’re on the road, look for bottled iced tea that is not sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. One of our favorites is Honest Tea.

Smoothie Favorites
Fruity frozen drinks make perfect breakfasts or snacks on hot days. Combine frozen fruit and milk or juice, blend, and serve. Try adding yogurt and/or protein powder. If you want to use fresh fruit, add ice. A little honey never hurts. Mix and match fruit flavors following our smoothie guidelines.
