Apple Crisp
The arrival of fall brings apple season. Farm stands lure us with pecks of beautiful reds, yellows, and greens. Apple festivals are celebrated with apple pie, apple butter, and homemade cider. Bring home a bag of beautiful local apples and warm your kitchen with apple crisp.
Recipe for Apple Crisp
4-5 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cubed
1 Tbl . flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 Tbl . honey
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into bits
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly butter an 8 inch baking pan.
2. In a medium bowl, combine cubed apples, 1 Tbl. flour, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, and honey. Stir to coat the apples. Pour mixture into prepared pan.
3. In a medium bowl, combine 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, salt, brown sugar, and oats.
4. Add butter bits to oatmeal mixture and cut in with a pastry blender or two knives until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in walnuts. Sprinkle mixture over the apples.
5. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes, until top is golden and crisp and filling is bubbly.
6. Allow crisp to cool to warm before serving. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
